Former MP Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a leading figure in the State of Law Coalition, confirmed on Monday that the withdrawal of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, head of the Reconstruction and Development Alliance, from the race against Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, has settled the issue of nominating the largest bloc’s candidate for the premiership. He stressed that the position is now guaranteed for al-Maliki.
Jaafar told the Information Agency, “The Coordination Framework has largely decided to nominate Nouri al-Maliki for the next Prime Minister, especially after al-Sudani announced his withdrawal in favor of al-Maliki.” He urged the framework’s leaders “not to delay issuing an official statement regarding al-Maliki’s nomination, as any delay could open the door to speculations that are not in everyone’s interest.”
He added that “there is information about a desire among some political forces to reconsider the distribution of sovereign ministries, but the matter has not yet been officially proposed.” He explained that “the change might include replacing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Ministry of Finance, with the possibility of assigning the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.”
