The spokesman for the Victory Coalition, Salam Al-Zubaidi, confirmed that what was being circulated regarding a complete concession by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani in favor of the leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri Al-Maliki, is not based on accurate data, indicating that the concession is partial and limited and does not affect the essence of the political understandings within the coordination framework.
Al-Zubaidi told Al-Maalouma that the leaders of the coordination framework were surprised by the extent of media and political talk about a comprehensive concession by Al-Sudani, noting that what is happening is a rearrangement of priorities and attempts to contain the disputes, and not a surrender of positions or a concession of powers.
He added that the coordination framework seeks to maintain the unity of its position in light of regional and internal political changes, stressing that the option of a “compromise candidate” is still strongly on the table, in the event that a final understanding is not reached with Maliki regarding the next stage.
Al-Zubaidi indicated that former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is one of the most prominent names proposed as a consensus candidate, given his balanced relations with various parties and his ability to manage a transitional phase without creating new crises within the Shiite bloc or with the rest of the political forces.
He pointed out that the framework does not want to enter into internal clashes or break its balances, and that the settlement option remains the closest in case the negotiations falter, especially with the escalating political and popular pressures demanding a stable government capable of addressing service and economic issues.
These statements come at a time when the political arena is witnessing intense behind-the-scenes activity to redraw the map of alliances, amid indications that the coordinating framework is seeking to avoid any internal division that could negatively impact the government and the overall stability of the country.
