Salam al-Zubaidi, a leader in the Victory Coalition, confirmed on Sunday that his coalition had contacted the Reconstruction and Development Coalition to verify reports circulating about Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s withdrawal from the race for the next prime minister.
Al-Zubaidi told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “The talk of al-Sudani’s complete withdrawal is inaccurate. His bloc confirmed to us yesterday, through our communication with them, that the withdrawal was only partial, and al-Sudani remains a candidate under consideration by the leaders of the Coordination Framework for the premiership.”
He added, “The Coordination Framework’s statement issued yesterday did not include any confirmation of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition leader’s withdrawal in favor of Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, contrary to what some media outlets have reported.” He pointed out that “the issue of the largest bloc’s candidate is still under discussion and has not yet been resolved.”
Al-Zubaidi explained that “the Victory Alliance contacted the Sudanese coalition directly to verify the media leaks, and the withdrawal report was denied. It was confirmed that al-Sudani had only softened his stance and insistence on the position in the event of a political deadlock, but he remains a strong contender.” He added that “the identity of the Coordination Framework’s candidate for prime minister will become clear next week.”
Some media outlets had reported yesterday evening that Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had withdrawn from the race for prime minister in favor of Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition.
