MP Mona al-Obeidi warned on Sunday of the dangers of raising taxes on citizens under the current economic conditions, stressing that such measures would increase the burden on the poor and middle classes.
Al-Obeidi told the Information Agency that “the government is required to search for realistic economic alternatives that do not place further burdens on citizens,” emphasizing that “diversifying non-oil revenue sources is the ideal solution to address the financial crisis and achieve economic stability.”
She added that “excessive reliance on oil has made the Iraqi economy vulnerable to the fluctuations of global markets,” stressing that “the next phase requires serious plans to develop the industrial, agricultural, and tourism sectors to secure additional resources for the state.”
