Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadel said on Saturday that the ministry has projects under implementation in addition to concluding strategic agreements with international companies to produce more than 60,000 megawatts.

This came in a speech he delivered during the launch of the 11th International “Iraq Energy” Exhibition and Conference, at the Baghdad International Fairgrounds, in the presence of outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.

The exhibition will run from January 10 to 12, 2026, under the supervision of the Minister of Electricity.

In a speech during the opening of the exhibition, the minister said, “The government has placed the energy file at the forefront of its priorities during the past three years, and the Ministry of Electricity has worked on implementing an integrated vision that included the rehabilitation of stations, and the launch of new production and investment projects under implementation with a capacity of nearly 15,000 megawatts, in addition to signing strategic agreements with international companies to establish new stations with a capacity of 48,000 megawatts that rely on local fuel.”

He explained that the ministry “has completed the stalled combined cycle projects, which will contribute to raising production efficiency and achieving additional energy from the same fuel without an increase in consumption, as well as developing transport networks and implementing electrical interconnection with neighboring countries, in addition to the solar power plants that are currently being implemented in several Iraqi governorates.”

For his part, outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said that the Ministry of Electricity is proceeding with an ambitious plan to increase electricity production, exceeding 57,000 megawatts, through the (Siemens and GE) project.

He added that there are dialogues and discussions with international companies to invest in associated gas and free gas within the fields and exploration blocks, and we hope to strengthen this trend through the conference, adding: We have moved towards establishing a stable platform to secure Iraq’s gas needs through import or export in the future.

Al-Sudani pointed out that the Ministry of Electricity is moving towards renewable energy at the level of large and small projects, noting that there is a plan at the level of districts and sub-districts in Baghdad and the governorates to switch to renewable energy, and it is hoped that it will be implemented next summer.

The current edition of the exhibition features the participation of more than 450 local and international companies representing 16 countries. The exhibition provides an advanced platform for exploring opportunities for cooperation and strategic partnerships between government entities and global companies, as well as showcasing the latest technologies and cutting-edge solutions in the fields of energy production, transmission, and distribution, thus contributing to the government’s plans to develop the energy sector’s infrastructure and diversify its energy sources.
