The head of the Experts Center for Strategic Studies, Sabah Zangana, confirmed on Sunday that the selection of the next prime minister remains open, but is proceeding along a largely settled path. He indicated that the ongoing understandings are primarily focused within the largest parliamentary bloc, with a clear effort to avoid political clashes that could return the country to a state of deadlock.
Zangana told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “The options currently on the table lean towards continuity or consensus, as these are the most likely in realistic calculations. Political analyses favor Haider al-Abadi over Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, but both are the most likely candidates, given their executive experience and relative acceptance both domestically and internationally.”
Zangana explained that “current indicators show that the most probable option is a candidate who enjoys the support of the Coordination Framework with implicit acceptance from the other parties.” He noted that influential forces now prefer a figure capable of managing internal balances, maintaining security and stability, and ensuring a balanced relationship with the region and the international community.
He added that “the negotiations have not yet reached a final announcement, but they have moved beyond the initial exploratory phase and entered into discussions concerning the structure and program of the next government, not just the name.” He explained that “the position is no longer decided solely on the basis of electoral weight, but rather on the ability to achieve the broadest political acceptance, especially from partners in other political blocs, thus ensuring the government’s passage through parliament without early crises.”
He concluded by saying that “the chances of confrontational or surprising options are clearly declining, and although the official announcement may be delayed, the direction of the decision is clearer than ever before.”
