The United Nations mission announces the end of its official mandate in IraqThe United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced Thursday (January 1, 2026), the end of its official mandate, confirming that the United Nations team in Iraq continues its work under the leadership of the United Nations Resident Coordinator.

The mission’s media office explained in a statement that “the United Nations team is working in close partnership with the Iraqi government to support national development priorities, through the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Document (2025–2029), which was signed on December 25, 2025.”

He noted that “this transition represents a clear step towards achieving long-term and sustainable development, led by national leadership and based on stronger institutions and effective partnerships.”

The United Nations affirmed its continued role as a trusted partner committed to supporting the government in the areas of economic diversification, climate action, water resource management, strengthening social protection, governance, and delivering sustainable solutions.
