The battle for the premiership intensifies... Al-Sudani is out of the political equationInformation / Baghdad –
Political consultations within the coordination framework are witnessing significant developments regarding the selection of a new candidate for the position of Prime Minister, amidst clear opposition to renewing the term of the current Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
Zuhair al-Jalabi, a member of the State of Law Coalition, confirmed in a statement to the Information Agency that there is no possibility of renewing al-Sudani’s term within the coordination framework. He pointed out that the political situation regarding the presidency is complicated by the absence of a strong figure within the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) to compete for the position.
Al-Jalabi considered the position of President of the Republic to be of equal importance to that of Prime Minister, with only minor differences. He added that the rejection of renewing al-Sudani’s term is a purely political matter and not related to personal animosity. He emphasized that the political blocs have agreed not to renew the terms of any of the three presidential positions. He also stressed the necessity for the next Prime Minister to possess competence and the ability to manage vital projects.

For his part, Abdul Rahman al-Jazaeri, head of the political body of the National Tribal Movement, explained that the political landscape is heading towards a change in the premiership, with clear rejection from both the Sunni and Kurdish blocs of renewing al-Sudani’s term. He considered the chances of renewal virtually nonexistent.
Al-Jazaeri emphasized that the final decision regarding the next prime minister rests with the Coordination Framework, noting that talk of actions outside this framework is no longer productive in light of the political and regional changes.
He added that the Coordination Framework has already decided on the alternative candidate, who has been chosen, and is awaiting the appropriate time to announce him within the framework of comprehensive understandings.
This development comes at a time when political circles are witnessing great anticipation for the announcement of a possible settlement that could reshuffle the map of executive power in Iraq, amidst pressure to form a government capable of confronting political and economic challenges.
Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s chances of renewing his term appear slim, as political forces focus on choosing a new figure who aligns with the interests of the Coordination Framework and the major political blocs.
