On Monday evening, the “Ishraqat Kanun” parliamentary bloc called for a reduction in the salaries of the three presidencies and members of parliament in order to send a message of reassurance to the Iraqi people.
MP Ahmed Majeed, speaking at a press conference held inside the House of Representatives and attended by a Shafaq News Agency correspondent, said, “With the launch of the sixth session of the House of Representatives, the new members of parliament must bear responsibility for the oversight and legislative roles, especially in light of the existence of important laws, including the salary scale, to reduce the salaries of the three presidencies and members of parliament in order to deliver a message of reassurance to the Iraqi people.”
He stressed that “members of parliament must activate the laws, most notably (Where did you get this from?) and the parties law, and reconsider the elections law and amend it, in order to convey a true message to the Iraqi people that parliament is the representative of the people.”
He pointed out that “we are far removed from the political process, therefore we demand that the political blocs adhere to the constitutional timelines and form a government and choose competent, non-partisan ministers in the next stage.”
The outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, directed in an extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Council for the Economy on December 15, to “conduct an urgent review of the file of allowances and salaries of the three presidencies, as well as to work on equalizing the salaries and allowances of all employees of the Presidency of the Republic and the Presidency of the House of Representatives with the employees of the Presidency of the Prime Minister in order to reduce government spending.”
Al-Sudani also directed, according to a statement from his office received by Shafaq News Agency at the time, the relevant committee in the Ministry of Planning to “make the necessary update to the report on unifying the salary scale for all employees and to take into account the recommendations submitted in this regard.”
Over the past years, many calls have been made by deputies, politicians, and citizens demanding an amendment to the employee salary scale due to the large disparity between one ministry and another, as well as demands to reduce the salaries of the three presidencies, ministers, senior officials, and deputies.
