Its pointless - A parliamentary committee demands a copy of Al-Sudanis governments contracts with WashingtonShafaq News/ On Saturday, Yasser al-Husseini, the deputy head of the Parliamentary Economy and Industry Committee, described the contracts recently concluded by the current Iraqi government, headed by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, with the United States as “a continuation of the series of contracts with suspicious parties.” He considered them “without any economic or technical feasibility and without any benefit to the Iraqi people.”

Al-Husseini told Shafaq News Agency, “There are doubts surrounding these contracts, and we believe there are malicious hands behind them. They are also subject to American pressure and the impact this has on the Iraqi economy, which raises our concerns about their repercussions for future generations.”

He added, “As the parliamentary Economy and Industry Committee, we will request that the Council of Ministers obtain a copy of these contracts to review their details, understand their working mechanism, and understand their importance to Iraq.”

Al-Husseini pointed out that “the signed contracts came in response to American pressure and influence, and courtesies at the expense of Iraqi interests,” adding that “some American companies contracting with the government have direct ties to and funding for the Zionist entity, and are considered guardians of its borders. This constitutes a failure when the Iraqi people are forced to pay money to protect the Zionist entity,” he said.

On April 9, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani sponsored the signing ceremony of three strategic memoranda of understanding with American companies, aimed at developing the energy and economic cooperation sectors in Iraq.

The first memorandum was with GE Vernova to develop combined cycle gas power plants with a capacity of up to 24,000 megawatts. This is the largest plan in Iraq’s history, with the possibility of securing external financing from international banks.

The second MoU was signed with UGT Renewable Group to establish an integrated solar energy project with a capacity of 3,000 megawatts, battery energy storage systems with a capacity of 500 megawatt-hours, upgrading electricity transmission and distribution lines, and constructing up to 1,000 km of new high-voltage direct current transmission infrastructure, in addition to technology transfer, training, and operation and maintenance for two years. The MoU is financed by the US Export-Import Bank, the UK Export Agency, and JP Morgan as the arranging bank.

The third memorandum was signed between the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce and the American Chamber of Commerce. It aims to enhance bilateral economic cooperation and expand communication between institutions, companies, organizations, and businesspeople in Iraq and the United States, with a focus on developing cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises in both countries.

A large economic delegation from the US Chamber of Commerce visited Iraq last Wednesday, including several American business leaders and investors.
