The National Iranian Gas Company commented on the information circulating about Trump canceling the exemption for Iraq from importing Iranian gas, indicating that there is a long-term contract with Iraq to supply gas, and that the sanctions may include other forms of gas imports. The CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company, Saeed Tavakoli, stated that gas exports to Iraq are currently underway, and since we recently extended a good contract for exporting gas, it is likely that the cancellation of the exemption granted to Iraq to import electricity and gas from Iran was for another form of gas imports.
He added, “Fortunately, the Iranian-Iraqi contract is in place, but the volume of exports increases and decreases according to the contractual terms,” noting that “the network conditions are currently stable, and 72 percent of the gas produced is being consumed in the domestic sector, and thanks to the cooperation of citizens, the gas supply network will remain stable in the coming days.”
While Tavakli did not clarify what he meant by the sanctions possibly including “other forms of gas imports,” and whether he meant that the sanctions would target Iraq’s contract with Turkmenistan via Iran.
