A group of experts confirmed to the British newspaper The National, on Wednesday, that early elections will not solve the political impasse in Iraq and may drag the country into a new crisis, while Baghdad is still without a new government despite the passage of 11 months since the previous elections.
Renad Mansour, a researcher on Iraq affairs at Chatham House in London, said in a report translated by “The Information”, that “it is difficult to expect different results because what we know is that most Iraqis do not vote, and in every election, the percentage of voting was lower and lower.”
He added that “those who reach voting age are less likely to vote, so the only people who vote are those linked to the social base of political parties, so it is difficult to “see a very big difference” if Iraq were to hold another election.”
For his part, political analyst and fellow at Century International, Sajjad Jiyad, said that “holding new elections may be a way to return the situation to a dead end, but we may end up in another dead end.”
He added that “calling for re-elections without concluding deals between political parties will not be the alternative to get out of the political impasse,” stressing that “elections are not the solution and may lead to the situation becoming more dangerous and people lose all confidence in democracy and the electoral process.”
He pointed out that “the results will be very similar due to the turnout, and we expect the turnout to be low again, but the results will remain the same.” finished / 25 z
