Kurdistan Democratic Bloc - Hoshyar Zebari will pass a parliamentary election for the presidencyShafaq News/ The representative of the Kurdistan Democratic bloc in the Iraqi parliament, Mahma Khalil, confirmed on Friday that the candidacy of Hoshyar Zebari for the presidency of the republic enjoys Shiite and Sunni support, and will pass with “great comfort” in Parliament.

The Iraqi parliament elected a presidential body after a political agreement between the Sadrist movement and the Democratic Party, the Alliance of Progress and Resolve, in addition to independent deputies, with an alliance of about 200 deputies.

Muhammad al-Halbousi was appointed as Speaker of Parliament, Hakim al-Zamili as first deputy, and Shakhwan Abdullah as second deputy.

Khalil told Shafaq News Agency, “Hoshyar Zebari enjoys broad acceptance and support from all Shiite and Sunni forces and allies of the Kurdistan Democratic Party within the region, with the exception of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan,” referring to understandings and agreements between the forces for Zebari to assume the presidency.

He added that “the presidency of the republic is an electoral and constitutional entitlement for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, in addition to the great political role of Zebari in the political process over the past years and its acceptability with the political forces.”

Since the overthrow of the former regime in Iraq in 2003, the position of President of the Republic has been held by the Kurds, but the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has occupied the position over the previous sessions.

And sources in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan had told Shafak News Agency, that the party would nominate the current president, Barham Salih, to occupy his position for a second term, and the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Latif Rashid, submitted his candidacy for the position of President of the Republic of Iraq.

Rashid is Adeel, secretary of the National Union and its founder, the late Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

Meanwhile, the Kurdish judge Rizgar Muhammad Amin told Shafaq News that he will run for the position, calling on the Kurdish political forces to vote for him in the dome of the Iraqi Parliament.

The Iraqi Council of Representatives had opened the door for nomination last Monday for the position of President of the Republic, provided that one of the candidates will be elected within a maximum period of February 8 next.
