Washington reviews plans to provide an additional 5.2 million to the election monitoring teamThe US embassy in Baghdad said Thursday that Washington has reviewed plans to provide an additional $5.2 million to the UNAMI election monitoring team .

The embassy stated, in a statement, that “the (Iraqi-American) delegations discussed how the United States can support the Iraqi government in the best way to protect demonstrators, activists, women in public life, and journalists, and pursue judicial accountability for violent crimes against those groups .”

She noted that “the United States recently provided $9.7 million to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for election-related technical assistance,” noting that Washington “reviewed plans to provide up to an additional $5.2 million for the mission’s election monitoring team.” UNAMI is waiting to engage with Congress .”

And she added, “The two countries agreed that the presence of a UNAMI monitoring team and another from the European Union mission represents a sincere effort by the international community to support the Iraqi people’s demands for free and fair elections in October.”
