The head of the High Commission for Human Rights in Iraq, Dr. Aqil Al-Mansoori Al-Moussawi, denounced the decision of the US Department of Justice to close a number of Iraqi news websites broadcast on the Internet.
Al-Moussawi, in a press statement, denounced the mechanism of blocking these sites without stating the reasons, considering them a “blatant violation” of human rights and a violation of the content of what was stated in (Article 19) of the High Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and to embrace opinions without any Interfering, obtaining, receiving and disseminating news and ideas by any means, regardless of geographical boundaries
The Chairperson of the Commission called on the Iraqi Media and Communications Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take an official position and veto the decision as it represents an emergency indicator that contradicts the principles of human rights, national security and public order, and targets the rights of an important segment of Iraqi society.
The head of the commission called on the Iraqi authorities affected by the decision to file lawsuits against the responsible parties and demand the Iraqi government to allocate a solid digital space that includes everyone, without discrimination, that provides legal and technical guarantees to protect the work of press institutions operating in Iraq, indicating “the readiness of the Commission for Human Rights in Iraq, To receive complaints in particular and refer them to the Public Prosecution.
