MP Hayam Al-Yasiri reiterated her call on Monday for fundamental amendments to the Iraqi Constitution, stressing that the current stage requires eliminating all redundant administrative and oversight bodies that drain the state, foremost among them the provincial councils, as well as ending the unproductive practice of power-sharing and quotas.
In a statement to the Information Agency, Al-Yasiri said, “A parliamentary movement led by a number of members of the House of Representatives aims to seriously and genuinely address the issue of constitutional amendments.” She explained that “administrative bloat and the existence of unnecessary formations and institutions have become a heavy financial and administrative burden on the state and its institutions without providing any tangible benefit to the citizen.”
She added that “provincial councils and the distribution of executive and political positions, which are not based on actual need, have contributed to hindering reconstruction and service delivery.” She pointed out that “amending the governing constitutional texts is the essential entry point for streamlining the structure of the political system, ensuring the effectiveness of government performance, and directing financial resources towards vital development projects instead of wasting them on privileges and appeasement positions.”
Al-Yassiri emphasized that “the campaign to collect signatures and exert parliamentary pressure to amend the constitution will continue in order to garner political and popular support,” noting that “comprehensive administrative and financial reform can only be achieved through a bold constitutional review that meets the aspirations of the Iraqi people and puts an end to bureaucracy and the unproductive multiplicity of authorities.”
