Najib al-Ghadban, senior advisor to the Syrian Foreign Minister, revealed today that his country aspires to expand the horizons of cooperation and coordination with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, especially in the file of returning refugees, noting that the new Syria has opened a new page in its policy towards internal components and neighboring countries.

Al-Ghadhban told Shafaq News Agency, on the sidelines of his participation in the “Miri Forum” held in Erbil, that “the new Syria has witnessed a comprehensive change in its system and policies towards all internal components as well as neighboring countries,” indicating that his country “aspires today to more cooperation and support, especially as it looks forward to a new phase after emerging from under the sanctions of the Security Council and the United States.”

He added that his country “still faces major challenges related to reconstruction, the financial situation, and the return of refugees, which requires concerted efforts from everyone, especially neighboring Iraq.”

Regarding the role of the Kurdistan Region in coordinating with Kurdish and Kurdish forces inside Syria, Al-Ghadban expressed his gratitude to the President of the Region, Nechirvan Barzani, praising his “very optimistic and encouraging vision towards the new Syria.”

He pointed out that “the Kurdistan Region has received and sheltered very large numbers of Syrian refugees throughout the past years of war,” while also noting the existence of large numbers of displaced people inside Syria who are living in difficult conditions.

Al-Ghadban stressed that “cooperation and coordination with the Kurdistan Region is of great importance to Damascus, as we view this relationship as a gateway to strengthening and expanding bilateral relations between Iraq and Syria in general.”

In a related context, the senior advisor to the Syrian Foreign Minister revealed the existence of a plan to expand diplomatic relations through the possibility of opening a new Syrian embassy and consulates in cities where their presence is needed, adding that “the serious financial problems and the reorganization of the political system in the country constitute an inevitable necessity and priorities at the present stage.”

Al-Ghadban concluded that Syria’s need is not limited to political support, but today it has “promising and great opportunities in the economic, investment and reconstruction fields,” expressing his country’s desire to benefit from the practical experiences and companies in the Kurdistan Region, given its “clear imprint and successful experience in the renaissance and reconstruction of the region.”
