Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi vowed on Sunday to personally take on the task of completing the allocation of residential land if any governorate falters in completing the necessary procedures, stressing the need to lay the foundation stone for the million residential land plots project before the end of this year.
This came during his chairmanship of the sixth regular session of the Higher Authority for Coordination between Governorates, which witnessed a review of the stages of completion of the “Homeland Initiative” project for the distribution of residential lands, in addition to discussing economic, development and health files.
Al-Zaydi stressed the government’s determination to complete the project without delay, calling on the governorates to complete the allocation processes and prepare the lands, as well as to expedite the implementation of the new cities project.
For his part, the Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, Ihsan Al-Awadi, announced that three governorates, namely Karbala, Najaf and Anbar, have completed the project requirements at a rate of 100%, while five governorates have achieved advanced completion rates, namely Maysan, Muthanna, Wasit, Baghdad and Nineveh, noting that 275,000 plots of land have become ready so far, while work continues in the remaining seven governorates.
In the file of supporting the industrial sector, the Authority agreed to obligate the governorates to implement the decisions of the Industrial Coordination Council No. (12 of 2026) and (29 of 2025), regarding completing the procedures for preparing and sorting one thousand dunams to allocate them for industrial projects, while obligating the governorates to submit reports on the procedures taken.
On the health and preventive side, it was decided to allocate two billion dinars to support measures to combat ticks that transmit Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, in coordination between the governorates and the Ministries of Health and Agriculture, including spraying and dipping animals and providing the necessary logistical support.
It was also decided to include the project to establish a 50-bed hospital within the plans of the governorates that include long external roads, especially those that have border crossings and witness heavy traffic of travelers, provided that the sites are chosen in coordination with the Ministries of Health and Planning, and that the hospitals are equipped with ambulances that are appropriate to the nature of the sites and their needs.
Yesterday, Saturday, Al-Zaydi laid the foundation stone for the project of one million residential plots ( Homeland Initiative ) in the governorates of Karbala and Najaf.
In mid-September, the National Investment Commission identified the city of Karbala as the first starting point for implementing the initiative to distribute one million residential plots of land, while procedures to prepare the lands included in the initiative continue in a number of other governorates.
The “Homeland Initiative” is a large-scale governmental and service program aimed at addressing the housing crisis and distributing one million residential plots of land throughout Iraq.
Official estimates indicate that between 3 and more than 9 million people live in informal settlements, while the Ministry of Planning confirms the existence of about 104,000 completely informal housing units housing between 500,000 and 600,000 people, revealing a housing gap that goes beyond traditional figures and puts the country before a complex developmental test.
The Prime Minister’s Media Office had previously confirmed to Shafaq News Agency that the residential land plots within the “Homeland” initiative would be completely free, and would include all Iraqi families whose members do not own a housing unit or property.
