MP Shaima al-Fatlawi criticized the government’s decision to proceed with raising the exchange rate of the US dollar through the Central Bank of Iraq on Sunday, describing this move as an ill-considered and hasty step that directly targets the daily sustenance of citizens and opens the door to a severe wave of price hikes.
In a statement to the Information Agency, al-Fatlawi said, “Insisting on raising the exchange rate will immediately lead to an unprecedented increase in the prices of basic goods and commodities, which will exhaust the poor and middle classes and deepen the economic recession and commercial paralysis in local markets, in the absence of any real reform solutions that support living standards.”
She added, “Addressing the financial crises cannot be achieved by weakening the purchasing power of the dinar and burdening ordinary citizens with the consequences of administrative failure and poor economic planning.” She stressed that “exporting the crisis to the streets and making it easy to drain citizens’ pockets represents a flawed and unacceptable monetary policy.”
Al-Fatlawi called on the government to “immediately and decisively reverse these measures and seriously shift towards building comprehensive development plans and activating productive sectors, while cracking down on corruption and financial waste with an iron fist, instead of resorting to policies that burden society and exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis.”
