On Saturday, Ammar al-Hakim, head of the State Forces Alliance, called for an end to the multiple exchange rates of the dollar and for bridging the gap between the official and parallel rates, stressing the need to protect the poor through a package of recent measures that he described as “supportive,” in light of the repercussions of regional conditions on the Iraqi economy.
Al-Hakim said, during his meeting with a group of sheikhs and dignitaries of Iraqi tribes in the Diwan of Baghdad, according to a statement issued by his office and received by Shafaq News Agency, that Iraq has been greatly affected by the events in the region, which led to a decline in oil production and exports, and the country incurred losses of tens of billions of dollars, which prompted the government to take immediate and long-term measures.
He added that the government adjusted the exchange rate in order to confront speculators and generate revenues, stressing the need to address the gap between the official and parallel rates, in order to reduce its economic repercussions, while taking measures to protect the poor.
Al-Hakim renewed his call to support the segments of farmers, contractors and employees, appreciating the efforts made in preparing the budget, with its discussion, voting on it and issuing instructions for its implementation coming soon.
He pointed out that the budget allocated five trillion dinars for regional development, with the aim of stimulating service projects, indicating that the upcoming budget targets the governorates of Diwaniyah and Salah al-Din, as well as the higher education and electricity sectors.
