MP Nour al-Juhayshi threatened on Saturday to boycott the vote on the federal budget, confirming that there is a parliamentary stance against its passage if the insistence on maintaining the dollar exchange rate at its current high levels without official intervention and a reduction is implemented.
Al-Juhayshi told the Information Agency, “The Parliament will not give its vote to the draft budget law unless the government and the Central Bank initiate a comprehensive review of the currency issue and reverse the increase in the exchange rate, which has burdened citizens and undermined the stability of local markets.”
She added, “Passing the budget at the current exchange rates means perpetuating inflation and depleting the purchasing power of the poor and middle classes.”
She indicated that “a broad parliamentary movement is currently forming to pressure for a reduction in the exchange rate and an amendment to monetary policies to protect citizens’ living standards before any vote takes place in Parliament.”
