A number of merchants and shop owners in Anbar province called on Friday for protest demonstrations against the rising exchange rate of the dollar, demanding the cancellation of the decision and a review of its repercussions on local markets and the purchasing power of citizens.
One of the province’s merchants, Taha Ali Al-Dulaimi, told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “a large number of merchants and shop owners called for organizing a protest to demand the cancellation of the decision to raise the dollar exchange rate, given its price in the parallel markets has risen to 166,000 dinars per 100 dollars.”
Al-Dulaimi added that “the decision led to a significant increase in the prices of food and other goods, which negatively affected market activity and turned many local markets into places almost empty of shoppers.”
He pointed out that “the living conditions of the poor have become extremely difficult due to the sudden rise in the dollar exchange rate and the accompanying increase in the prices of food and other goods,” warning that there are parties seeking to exploit the rise in the exchange rate to achieve financial gains, without regard for the suffering of citizens.
