MP Saad Al-Awadi criticized on Thursday the decision of the Central Bank of Iraq to raise the exchange rate of the dollar, calling on the government to immediately stop these measures and subject the financial file to a thorough and serious study that seeks real solutions to the banking crisis.
Al-Awadi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “resorting to adjusting and raising the exchange rate represents a patchwork policy that is ineffective and burdens the citizen and exacerbates the living challenges without providing radical solutions to the national economy,” stressing that “repeating these steps threatens to deepen the financial and banking crisis instead of containing it.”
He added that “the government has multiple economic options and alternatives to maximize the state’s resources and avoid financial distress, foremost among them diversifying national income sources, moving away from absolute dependence on oil revenues, activating productive sectors such as industry, agriculture and investment, as well as controlling border crossings and reducing financial waste.”
Al-Awadi stressed “the necessity for the executive authority to take action to halt these monetary mechanisms and to meet with experts to develop a sound financial strategy that protects monetary stability and safeguards the purchasing power of citizens.”
