On Thursday, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi directed that the collection of customs duties and taxes imposed on imported eggs, chickens, and live meat products be postponed.

The Prime Minister’s Media Office stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the decision aims to support the stability of local markets and provide these basic materials at reasonable prices, making them accessible to all citizens.

In turn, the Ministry of Finance directed the General Authority of Customs to postpone the collection of customs duties on live red meat, chicken and eggs, according to an official statement.

The ministry said in a statement, received by Shafaq News Agency, that this directive comes within the framework of supporting the stability of basic food prices and easing the burdens on citizens, which contributes to strengthening market stability and providing these products at reasonable prices, according to the ministry.

Prices of several food items in Iraqi markets witnessed a significant increase today, following the raising of the official exchange rate of the US dollar from 1320 dinars per dollar to 1520 dinars. Some merchants immediately raised prices, while others preferred to stop selling until market developments become clear, according to a report by Shafaq News Agency.

Economist Manar Al-Obaidi called today for a one-year freeze on customs tariffs, warning that the combination of high tariffs and the new exchange rate could double the cost of imported goods and affect consumers, particularly food, medicine, and production inputs
