Parliamentary Finance Committee - The government received debts of approximately 210 trillion dinarsMember of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, Youssef Al-Kalabi, confirmed on Thursday that the Iraqi government inherited a difficult financial situation in light of the accumulation of debts and the decline in oil revenues. Al-Kalabi stated in a statement that “Al-Kadhimi’s government, despite the rise in the dollar exchange rate and the problems that accompanied it, which the citizen bears the burden of, handed over to Al-Sudani’s government a cash surplus of 70 trillion dinars.”

He added that “the Sudanese government handed over to the current government outstanding debts of nearly 210 trillion dinars, coinciding with the cessation of oil sales for more than six months due to the events in the Strait of Hormuz,” noting that “these developments have placed the country before major financial challenges that require urgent measures to address them.”

He also explained that “the current government took over a financial administration suffering from major problems at a time when Iraq relies primarily on oil revenues to finance the general budget and pay employee salaries,” noting that “the continued disruption of oil revenues threatens the state’s ability to meet its financial obligations.”

He stressed the need to “reveal the parties responsible for plunging the country into debt, wasting public funds, and projects implemented at inflated costs,” calling for decisive measures to be taken against those involved in corruption and the squandering of public money.
