MP Saba al-Saadi confirmed on Wednesday that reducing the salaries of senior and special-grade officials could save the state billions and contribute to addressing the budget deficit. She pointed out that this step had been taken previously by past governments, particularly during Haider al-Abadi’s administration.
Speaking to Al-Maalouma, al-Saadi said, “Reducing the salaries of MPs, ministers, and senior officials can save money for the budget.” She explained that “the salaries of MPs and ministers are not exempt from financial reform measures, and that reductions have been implemented before without negatively impacting the economy or the market.”
She added that “the reduction should not be limited to basic salaries but should also include allowances, as well as those of deputy ministers, advisors, and special-grade officials.” She emphasized that “these measures would free up funds that could be allocated to the budget.”
Al-Saadi explained that “one of the reasons hindering the passage of the salary scale law is related to the issue of salaries for special grades,” noting the political and administrative difficulties in proceeding in this direction.
She pointed out that “the government has taken what it described as the easiest step by resorting to measures affecting the economy and the market, while the Ministry of Finance believes that reducing the salaries of special grades is a more difficult step.”
She added that “the rise in the dollar exchange rate has impacted the market and increased commodity prices, which has affected the purchasing power of employees and low-income citizens, while reducing the salaries of special grades will not have the same impact on the market, but could contribute to enhancing fairness and reducing the burdens of the financial crisis.”
