Ahmad al-Harki, a leader in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), affirmed on Monday that the agreement to unify the Peshmerga forces and place them under the authority of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) represents a positive step towards ending the political deadlock and resolving the crisis surrounding the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government, which has been stalled for over two years.
Al-Harki told the Information Agency, “The Peshmerga forces are official forces recognized by the Iraqi Constitution, and it is neither correct nor acceptable for them to remain under multiple commands.” He pointed out that “the decision to unify them under a single governmental umbrella establishes a strong foundation for understanding that will resolve the deep-seated differences hindering the formation of the new government.”
He added that “practical steps to organize and unify these forces have already begun on the ground and are progressing seriously towards full implementation,” anticipating that “the process will be officially completed very soon.”
It is worth noting that the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, had previously announced reaching a final agreement to complete the unification and reorganization of the Peshmerga forces and link them directly to the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs within the KRG structure.
