The Axios news website reported on Saturday evening that the United States had “expelled” two members of Iran’s delegation to the United Nations, while US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that Iran has an opportunity to abandon its nuclear program voluntarily, otherwise we may have to “enforce it by force.”

Axios quoted a US official as saying that “the United States expelled two members of Iran’s UN delegation from New York after they stayed after the end of the General Assembly.”

He added that “the two Iranian diplomats did not comply with the US State Department’s request to leave with the members of the delegation.”

In addition, the US Secretary of Defense said that “President Donald Trump has given Iran every opportunity to resolve the issue through negotiations.”

Hegseth continued, “The mission against Iran is not like previous wars, and it will not last indefinitely. Tehran must make the right decision and change course.”

He stressed that “Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz, but we do, and the blockade against it remains tight and strict.”

These statements come at a time when Iranian state television reported on Saturday evening that an explosion had occurred on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz that had turned off its tracking system while entering the strait.

For its part, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that Iranian air defenses shot down an enemy drone in the airspace of Qeshm Island in the south of the country.

The strait has become the central bargaining chip in efforts to end the nearly seven-month-long US-Iranian conflict, with Iran seeking relief from the US embargo that is strangling its economy, while Washington seeks free passage for ships on the global oil supply route.
