The toman continues to fall... the dollar surpasses 270000 despite the central banks interventionShafaq News – Tehran
On Sunday, the Iranian toman continued its decline against the dollar, which exceeded 270,000 tomans in the free market, despite the central bank beginning to implement a plan to offer up to $2 billion to support the local currency.

According to exchange rate data seen by Shafaq News Agency, the selling price of the dollar reached 270,950 tomans, compared to 268,250 tomans for buying, in the update at eleven o’clock in the morning Tehran time, an increase of 1,450 tomans, or 0.54%, compared to its price of 269,500 tomans the previous day.

The data shows that the dollar’s price in tomans rose by about 14.79% in one week, and 74.75% in six months.

The Iranian Central Bank announced last Wednesday a plan to release up to $2 billion in cash into the market, starting with an initial phase of $1 billion through selected bank branches and exchange bureaus.

The ceiling for purchasing foreign currency with the national ID card was also raised to ten thousand dollars for citizens who are over the age of eighteen.

The currency’s decline comes amid pressure from US sanctions and a naval blockade that restricts oil exports, one of Iran’s most important sources of foreign currency.

Mehdi Darabi, advisor to the Central Bank governor on foreign exchange affairs, attributed part of the decline to statements by US officials regarding the collapse of the Iranian economy, considering that they affect the exchange market, and described the currency’s decline as temporary.

The exchange rate crisis coincides with a sharp rise in prices, as data from the Iranian Statistics Center for the month of Shahrivar, which ended in September, showed that consumer prices rose by 89.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, while the average annual inflation rate reached 73.6%, and the monthly inflation rate reached 4.2%, according to what was reported by the Iranian news agency Tasnim.
