The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Wednesday that the official end of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq does not mean the end of cooperation with friendly countries, stressing the Republic of Iraq’s commitment to continuing its efforts in combating terrorism.
In a statement, the Ministry said, “On the occasion of the official end of the mission of the international coalition to fight ISIS in Iraq, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms that this achievement represents Iraq’s transition to a new phase in which it assumes full responsibility for its security and stability, within the framework of consolidating its national sovereignty and strengthening the independence of its security decision, in line with its priorities and supreme interests, and embodies the ability of its constitutional institutions and competent security agencies to carry out their national responsibilities.”
The Ministry praised “the unity of the people of Iraq and the solidarity of its institutions, which formed a fundamental pillar in overcoming one of the most difficult stages in its modern history, and achieving victory over the ISIS terrorist gangs,” adding, “While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalls, with all reverence and pride, the sacrifices of Iraq’s righteous martyrs and the heroism of the sons of our armed forces in all their branches and formations, the Popular Mobilization Forces and the Peshmerga, it appreciates the great role played by the armed forces and the security and intelligence services in protecting the country and preserving the security of citizens, and the efficiency and vigilance they demonstrated in facing security challenges and maintaining stability.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its “deepest thanks and appreciation to the United States of America, as the leader of the international coalition, and to the friendly countries participating in it, in appreciation of their role in supporting and assisting Iraq during its war against ISIS terrorist gangs, and the contributions and sacrifices they made, including the sacrifices made by members of the coalition forces who fell during military operations against the terrorist organization.” It also appreciated “the cooperation and joint coordination between the coalition forces and the Iraqi armed forces, and their contribution to achieving victory over the terrorist organization.”
The ministry added that “the official end of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq does not mean the end of cooperation with friendly countries, as security cooperation will remain a path based on common interests and mutual respect for national sovereignty, and includes training, exchange of experiences and information, and capacity building, which enhances security and stability and supports international efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.”
The ministry reiterated “the commitment of the Republic of Iraq to continue its efforts in combating terrorism and strengthening its national security, and to consolidate its relations with friendly countries and international partners, on the basis of mutual respect and common interests, in a way that serves security and stability at the regional and international levels.”
