The spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Mahmoud Mohammed, confirmed on Wednesday that an agreement with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan on a number of issues had been reached some time ago, indicating that the two sides had intensified their efforts in recent days to resolve the remaining disputes and obstacles.
Mohammed told reporters on the sidelines of his participation in a condolence gathering, including a correspondent from Shafaq News Agency, that “what both sides are currently waiting for relates to how to activate the work of Parliament and form the new government.”
Mohammed denied any knowledge of any country intervening to mediate between the Democratic Party and the National Union regarding the formation of the government, stressing that “meetings, relations and messages were continuous and did not stop, and this communication led the two sides to this agreement.”
He pointed out that “the Kurdistan Democratic Party has wanted from the beginning to form a new government with the participation of all parties,” explaining that “participation in this government depends on what the talks will produce.”
Despite more than a year and a half having passed since the Kurdistan Region Parliament elections, the tenth government cabinet remains stuck amid ongoing political disputes between the two main parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
The Kurdistan Region Parliament elections, held on October 20, 2024, produced a new political reality that redrawn the balance of power within the parliament, but did not give any party a comfortable majority that would allow it to form a government on its own, which made consensus among the main forces a prerequisite for forming the new government cabinet.
According to the final election results, the Democratic Party won 39 seats, while the National Union came in second with 23 seats, while the New Generation Movement made remarkable progress by winning 15 seats.
The Kurdistan Islamic Union won 7 seats, the National Position won 4 seats, and the Kurdistan Justice Group won 3 seats, while the remaining seats were distributed among other political forces and the quota seats for the components.
These results clearly showed that the Democratic Party maintained its position as the largest political force in the region, but it did not obtain the absolute majority that would enable it to form a government on its own, and the National Union remained the second force capable of influencing the power-sharing equation.
