On Tuesday, economist Diaa Mohsen accused the federal government of clear negligence in resolving the issue of unofficial border crossings in the Kurdistan Region. He emphasized that turning a blind eye to these crossings is causing significant financial damage to the country’s public treasury, in addition to serious security and health repercussions.
Mohsen told the Information Agency that “there are approximately 26 unofficial border crossings within the region that are still operating outside the law.” He explained that “the continued commercial activity at these uncontrolled crossings represents a significant waste and depletion of the state’s financial resources and opens the door wide to the smuggling of crude oil and petroleum products, as well as the influx of spoiled and expired goods that threaten the safety of citizens.”
He added that “the region’s unofficial border crossings constitute a serious security and economic vulnerability that must be closed as soon as possible,” calling on the central government to “fully assert its federal authority over these crossings and expedite the automation of all border crossings in the region and their connection to the national network, similar to the procedures implemented at the land and sea ports of the southern and western provinces.”
