Karbala Agriculture Directorate: Significant increase in date production this year

The Karbala Agriculture Directorate announced on Sunday that date production rates in the province have increased during 2026 compared to previous years. A statement from the directorate indicated that “date production in Karbala witnessed a clear increase this year, expected to exceed 220,000 tons of various date varieties from more than 3 million palm trees, compared to last year’s 180,000 tons.”
He added that “the palm sector receives great attention from the local government, as well as support from the Ministry of Agriculture through the implementation of preventive campaigns and the control of pests and diseases that affect palm trees.” The statement explained that “the decrease in insect infestations, especially the Dubas insect, compared to previous years, has had a positive impact on the quantity and quality of date production,” indicating that control operations rely on multiple methods, including spraying and injection.
He added that “preventive campaigns also include combating diseases of flower inflorescence rot (palm pollen rot) and leaf blight, and that these campaigns are carried out annually free of charge by providing the necessary pesticides and under the supervision of specialized staff in the Plant Protection Department and the protection units spread throughout the governorate.”
