America warns its citizens in Iraq of an “unexpected escalation” in the region

The US Embassy in Baghdad and its Consulate General in Erbil issued a security warning to American citizens on Wednesday morning, coinciding with escalating security tensions in the Middle East following the exchange of military strikes between Washington and Tehran.
The embassy said in a statement that “due to tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unexpected escalation.”
The statement added that “Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise extreme caution and be prepared for the possibility of flight cancellations, border or airspace closures, and travel disruptions.”
The embassy urged American citizens to check their flight status and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to ensure they receive the latest security updates and can be easily contacted in emergencies.
The statement also outlined a set of recommended actions, most notably:
Continuously monitor the situation and surroundings and observe local media.
Avoid demonstrations, large gatherings, and areas with a heavy security presence.
Follow the instructions of the local authorities and contact the airlines directly to find out about any changes to the flight schedule.
Exercise caution and maintain a high level of preparedness in public places.
