On Tuesday, MP Hayam Al-Yasiri, from the Reconstruction and Development Bloc, accused the Ministry of Oil and the national export company SOMO of refusing to export crude oil via Iraqi tankers belonging to the Ministry of Transport through the Strait of Hormuz, despite obtaining American and Iranian security approvals, speaking of “suspicions of corruption” behind this refusal.
Al-Yasiri told Shafaq News Agency that “the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Communications hosted today the Minister of Transport and the senior staff of the ministry to discuss several files, and one of the most prominent outcomes of the hosting was an important issue related to Iraqi oil exports and the existence of a dispute between the Ministries of Transport and Oil that prevents addressing it.”
She explained that “the Maritime Transport Company, affiliated with the Ministry of Transport, has the full technical capability to transport Iraqi oil while providing the necessary insurance,” indicating that “the Ministry of Transport confirmed the existence of a green light and security safety in the American and Iranian routes for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”
Al-Yassiri added that “the Ministry of Oil and SOMO refuse to transport crude oil through the General Company for Maritime Transport,” noting that “the available information indicates suspicions of corruption and the dominance of one person over the transport process within the Ministry of Oil.”
The MP quoted the director of the maritime transport company as saying that “Iraq has the necessary tankers to export its oil itself, but the intransigence of the oil company and SOMO prevents this,” demanding that the Prime Minister, Ali al-Zaidi, “intervene urgently and give the authority to the Ministry of Transport to immediately begin transporting Iraqi oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz.”
