On Monday, the acting Interior Minister, Hussein Al-Awadi, decided to withdraw all security personnel assigned to members of parliament who were convicted of financial corruption.
An informed source in the ministry told Shafaq News Agency that Al-Awadi issued an order to the Directorate of Personal Protection to withdraw the police officers assigned to protect the MPs who were referred to court on corruption charges.
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi had launched a campaign of arrests of a number of MPs and government officials involved in financial corruption cases, which he called “Dawn of Sunday” and “Dawn Charge,” because the first operations took place at dawn on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
The operation at the time included the issuance of arrest warrants, summonses, and investigations targeting dozens of prominent officials and politicians, including former and current members of parliament, officials, and businessmen, on charges related to wasting public funds and illicit gains.
The campaign’s initial strikes targeted complex corruption networks controlling ports, customs, the energy sector, and taxes, achieving immediate results in the recovery and freezing of assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars and their immediate return to the state treasury.
