A security source in Baghdad province revealed on Friday that a counter-terrorism force arrested the confidant of former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in a surprise security operation in Baghdad.
The source told the Information Agency that “a security force from the Counter-Terrorism Service raided the home of businessman Nimir al-Aqabi, owner of the Iraq Gate complex, who is close to al-Sudani and senior officials in his previous government. Al-Aqabi is the main suspect in money laundering operations and fictitious investments estimated at more than 20 trillion dinars.”
The source added that “al-Aqabi is considered the confidant of al-Sudani and a number of senior officials in the current and previous governments,” indicating that “the arrest of al-Aqabi will lead to the downfall of senior officials in al-Sudani’s government.” The source explained that “the special force tasked with pursuing corrupt officials and members of parliament is refusing to provide any information about its targets or the addresses it is heading to to police stations and other agencies, fearing leaks and the escape of those wanted.”
