The issue of combating corruption has resurfaced in the political arena, with growing talk of political pressure on the government. This coincides with demands to reopen files and review contracts signed during previous administrations. Parliamentarians are emphasizing the need for legal and political cover for the relevant authorities to pursue those involved and recover public funds. They assert that the success of any anti-corruption campaign requires neutralizing political pressure and enabling oversight and judicial institutions to perform their duties without interference. Furthermore, they stress the importance of reviewing contracts and files suspected of involving the misuse of public funds. In this context, Ali Saber al-Kinani, a member of the parliamentary legal committee, revealed that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is facing political pressure to prevent him from opening corruption files.
Speaking to Al-Maalomah News Agency, al-Kinani stated, “Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is being subjected to political pressure from certain parties and political forces due to the measures the government is taking in the fight against corruption.” He explained that “Al-Zaydi is facing political pressure aimed at halting his campaign against corruption, especially given the ongoing pursuit of several corruption cases that have captured public attention.” He added that “the fight against corruption requires political and legislative support, free from pressures that could hinder the work of the relevant authorities in pursuing those involved and recovering public funds.” He called for “the necessity of providing legal and political cover for government measures aimed at combating corruption, and preventing any interference that might affect the course of investigations or obstruct the accountability of those involved.” Calls for a Review of Previous Government Files : For his part, MP Ahmed Al-Sharmani called for a review of several files dating back to the government of former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, within the framework of investigations related to corruption, mismanagement, and abuse of power. Al-Sharmani told Al-Ma’louma News Agency that “Al-Zaydi’s government is required to open all contracts concluded during the previous government’s term,” explaining that “the current stage necessitates a comprehensive review of all contracts concluded during the previous government’s tenure, without excluding any file from investigation, to ensure the accountability of those involved and the protection of public funds.” He added, “There are numerous files that require scrutiny, including Ministry of Health contracts, the General Company for Marketing Drugs and Medical Supplies (Kimadia), and the exemptions file, in addition to Ministry of Construction and Housing projects, investment and tax files, and residential complexes, as well as other files that need thorough review.” He emphasized that “opening these files represents a fundamental step in combating corruption, recovering wasted funds, and establishing the principle of accountability, which will enhance citizens’ trust in oversight and judicial institutions.” Al-Sharmani called on the government and relevant authorities to “deal seriously with all controversial contracts and refer any violations or suspicions of corruption to the judiciary to take legal action against those involved.”Observers believe that the government’s success in combating corruption will remain contingent on its ability to overcome political pressures and empower oversight and judicial bodies to operate independently. This independence must ensure that all cases are opened without exception, public funds are recovered, and those involved are held accountable under the law, free from any political or partisan considerations.
