On Saturday evening, Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, stressed the need to prevent any transgression or threat emanating from Iraqi territory towards neighboring countries, announcing the formation of a joint security committee to confront the challenges, while directing the development of deterrent mechanisms to prevent the recurrence of such cases or any potential violations.
This came during his chairing of an emergency meeting to discuss security developments in the region, according to a statement from his office received by Shafaq News Agency.
According to the statement, Al-Zaydi also directed the Iraqi security services to enforce the law, enhance security and stability, and assume their responsibilities in protecting sovereignty and good neighborliness.
The meeting affirmed the readiness of the armed forces to thwart any attempt targeting neighboring countries within our regional sphere and renewed its firm commitment not to allow Iraqi territory to be used as a launching pad or passage for aggression against brotherly and friendly countries, within the framework of its responsibility to preserve national sovereignty and respect the principles of good neighborliness and international law.
Jordan and Syria had informed the Iraqi government of monitoring movements of “militias” near the border, warning that any attack launched from their territories “will not go unanswered,” according to what the Saudi channel “Al-Arabiya” quoted from official Jordanian and Iraqi sources.
The New York Times reported on Saturday evening that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard had recently been in contact with leaders of Iraqi armed factions, Hezbollah, and the Houthis to discuss mechanisms for expanding operations in the event of a wider confrontation in the region.
These developments come as US President Donald Trump was considering, on Saturday evening, “issuing an immediate order” to strike “energy facilities” in Iran, according to the Axios news website.
The U.S. State Department on Saturday urged its citizens in the Middle East to exercise caution and be prepared for possible airspace closures and travel disruptions, noting that Iran and its allied groups may target U.S. interests or citizens around the world.
