The Ministry of Electricity announced on Friday a plan of two tracks and five axes to add 7,000 megawatts and raise production to 35,000 by 2030.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Turki, said that “the ministry’s plan within the government program aims to add about 7,000 megawatts to the national grid, to reach a production of 35,000 megawatts by 2030,” noting that “the plan comes within the government program, and aims to increase production capacities through 5 axes that include expanding the establishment of new production stations, completing stalled projects, and converting a number of stations to the combined cycle system to raise their production efficiency.”
He added that “the plan also includes, in a fourth point, expanding solar energy projects, as well as developing transmission and distribution networks to accommodate new production capacities and reduce losses,” explaining that “the ministry’s plan is based on two parallel tracks: the first is maximizing the benefit from local gas through associated gas investment projects and reducing its flaring, while the second track focuses on diversifying fuel and gas sources by importing gas from more than one source, which ensures the stability of station operations and enhances energy security in Iraq.”
He pointed out that “regional electricity interconnection projects are part of the ministry’s vision to achieve energy security, and include completing the interconnection with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Turkey.”
Turki emphasized that “interconnection projects will provide greater flexibility to the electrical grid and contribute to energy exchange during emergencies or peak load times,” noting that they “represent a supporting factor for the national grid and are not a substitute for developing local production.”
