Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, arrived this evening, Wednesday, at the headquarters of the Popular Mobilization Forces, and met with the head of the organization and a number of its leaders and security officials.
The Prime Minister’s Media Office said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that “Al-Zaydi listened to a detailed explanation regarding the attacks that Iraq was subjected to at dawn today, which resulted in the martyrdom and injury of a number of members of the Popular Mobilization Forces in a number of governorates.”
According to the statement, Al-Zaydi directed that “the families of the martyrs be honored, full health care be provided to the wounded, and all necessary measures be taken to ensure their treatment, including transferring them outside of Iraq if their health condition requires it.”
The Iraqi Security Council, in an emergency meeting chaired by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, condemned the American-Saudi attack, instructing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take international action to document the situation and establish Iraq’s legitimate rights.
This stance comes after Saudi Arabia accused “Iraqi factions loyal to Iran” of launching drones targeting energy facilities inside the kingdom, while the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard directed more than 30 air attacks within 72 hours against US forces and Saudi infrastructure.
Early Wednesday, CENTCOM announced that US and Saudi fighter jets had carried out precision strikes on weapons and logistics supply sites in several areas of eastern Iraq, which it said belonged to Iranian-backed factions responsible for those attacks.
The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces announced on Wednesday that at least 20 of its members were killed and 32 others were wounded, in what it described as a “non-final” toll from the joint US-Saudi strikes that targeted its official headquarters in a number of Iraqi provinces.
For its part, the Iraqi resistance gave the government time to wait for its response to the bombing of the Popular Mobilization Forces headquarters, while vowing to retaliate against America and Saudi Arabia.
The escalation prompted Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi to cancel his planned visit to Saudi Arabia, according to a government source who spoke to Shafaq News Agency.
