US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the attack on the “militias” in Iraq was carried out in coordination with the Iraqi government, hours after the headquarters of the Popular Mobilization Forces were targeted by “US-Saudi” aircraft, resulting in deaths and injuries.
Trump asserted in remarks reported by a Fox News correspondent and followed by Shafaq News Agency that “the militias supported by Iran are the cancer of the world.”
Following Iran’s surprise attack on US forces, the US president added: “We will strike them hard, and we will inflict severe blows upon them.”
He added that “Iran’s attack yesterday in Jordan was a surprise and our forces only had minutes to shoot down the Iranian missiles.”
The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) had previously announced that at least 20 of its members were killed and 32 others were wounded, in what it described as a “non-final” toll, as a result of strikes targeting its headquarters in a number of Iraqi provinces.
Both the US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Saudi Ministry of Defense officially announced that they had carried out the strikes inside Iraq.
Earlier today, Axios quoted a US official as saying that Iran launched several ballistic missiles at dawn toward a US military base in Jordan, in the first such attack since Trump suspended strikes on Iran to allow for diplomatic efforts.
