The US mission in Baghdad renewed its warning to American citizens on Wednesday against traveling to Iraq due to what it described as “terrorism, kidnapping and armed conflict,” noting the “limited” ability of the United States to provide them with assistance.
In a security alert issued today, the mission said that “Iranian-backed militia groups have launched attacks from Iraqi territory targeting locations inside Iraq and in the region,” stressing that these attacks pose serious risks to public safety.
The mission urged American citizens in Iraq to maintain the highest levels of vigilance, monitor local media, and adhere to the instructions of the authorities, warning of the possibility of travel disruptions or airspace closures without prior notice.
The mission reiterated that Iraq remains subject to a Level 4 travel warning: “Do not travel,” noting that the decision is based on the risks of terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict and civil unrest, as well as the limited ability of the U.S. government to provide emergency services to its citizens inside Iraq.
