A senior official in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) revealed on Monday that the administration of US President Donald Trump is pressuring the region’s leadership, giving them a choice between engaging in a war against Iran or facing US measures that could affect the region’s status and support.
The official told the Information Agency that “the Trump administration is pressuring the region’s leadership to directly engage in a war with Iran, and if they do not comply with Washington’s demands, it may take measures including abolishing the region’s autonomy, halting financial support, and stopping the arming of the regional guard forces.”
He added that “Iran has issued a strongly worded warning to the KRG, threatening to take escalatory steps that could target the region’s authority and autonomy,” noting that “Tehran has also requested, through diplomatic channels, the expulsion of Iranian Kurdish opposition parties residing within the region.”
He pointed out that “the continued presence of these parties could lead to a broader security escalation, coinciding with the increasing Iranian missile attacks targeting Erbil and areas where these groups are deployed,” stressing that “the Trump administration is seeking to drag the regional government into the regional conflict to achieve its goals.”
