The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced on Monday that it had intercepted and destroyed a number of drones that it said had been launched from Iraqi territory and had attempted to target oil facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh.
In a statement, Saudi Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said that air defenses intercepted and destroyed, during the past few hours, a number of drones that attempted to target oil facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh.
Al-Maliki added that these “terrorist” attempts were launched from Iraqi territory and carried out by “terrorist militias affiliated with Iran,” stressing the Kingdom’s right to defend itself and its capabilities, and its right to respond “at the appropriate time and place.”
For its part, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its condemnation “in the strongest terms” of what it described as “reprehensible attacks” against the Kingdom by drones that it said were launched by “Iranian-backed militias in Iraq”.
The ministry affirmed the Kingdom’s determination to preserve its security and sovereignty and deter aggressors, and its adherence to its right to respond to sources of aggression, stressing the need for the Iraqi government to “take all necessary measures to ensure that its territory is not used as a launching pad for attacks.”
Earlier today, the Jordanian army announced that it had intercepted and shot down two drones that targeted the Kingdom’s territory, without any human casualties or material damage being recorded.
