Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Sheikh Fahd Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, stressed on Saturday the depth of bilateral relations between his country and Iraq, affirming the determination to confront any attempts to sow discord between the two brotherly peoples.
This came during a joint press conference with Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani at the Safwan border crossing, attended by a correspondent from Shafaq News Agency, following a high-level security and governmental reception for the visiting Kuwaiti delegation.
Sheikh Sabah said during the conference: “The relationship that unites us with Iraq and my brother, the Governor of Basra, goes beyond friendship to a firm brotherhood, and whatever happens, we will remain brothers.” He added, “These official visits will be repeated and will not be the last, and to any party that tries to sow discord between the two countries, we say that the sedition will be nipped in the bud.”
Regarding the field procedures, the Kuwaiti Minister of Interior revealed that he will personally follow up on the incident that took place at the Al-Abdali border crossing two days ago as a result of it being bombed by drones, announcing that “the crossing will resume its normal operation within the next 48 hours.”
He firmly asserted: “Whoever wants evil for Kuwait and Iraq, we will fight them strongly. Anyone who tries to stop the movement of people and trade between the two countries, this is impossible, and the movement will continue normally.”
For his part, Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani welcomed the visiting delegation, noting that the visit comes for high-level coordination and to convey messages of brotherhood between Iraq and the Gulf countries through the State of Kuwait.
Al-Eidani explained at the press conference that “the region is going through critical circumstances and is exposed to wars that have harmed several countries without them being a party to them, and Iraq and Kuwait have been harmed by these repercussions,” noting that “despite the irresponsible individual actions that sometimes occur, the brotherly relations are sufficient to rectify these mistakes, and the governments of the two countries are working with joint effort to ensure the security and stability of the region.”
Popular and political circles in Iraq have witnessed a state of discontent in recent days, following the incident of the killing of an Iraqi fisherman and the wounding of others by Kuwaiti coast guard fire, which prompted security and diplomatic leaders on both sides to take urgent action to contain the repercussions.
