The “Victory” coalition, led by former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, confirmed on Saturday that the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zubaidi enjoys broad support from political forces and strong backing from the forces of the Coordination Framework, indicating that its coalition supports the government’s moves in the files of combating corruption and foreign openness.
Coalition spokesman Aqeel al-Rudaini told Shafaq News Agency that his coalition supports the measures taken by al-Zaidi as part of the campaign to combat corruption and reduce waste of public funds, as well as the results of his two recent visits to the United States and Iran, and the agreements and contracts that resulted from them, in addition to the government’s moves to strengthen diplomatic relations with Arab countries, considering these files to be a priority for the next stage.
He added that Iraq faces complex challenges in light of the ongoing war between the United States and Iran, the repercussions of which have been felt in the country, particularly with regard to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its impact on trade and energy, which calls for “high-level diplomacy” in managing relations with both Washington and Tehran.
Al-Rudaini pointed out, “This is what the Prime Minister did during his visits to the two countries, and we hope that the outcomes of these visits will be in the interest of Iraq during the next stage.”
Al-Rudaini’s remarks came at a time when the Iraqi government continues its diplomatic moves amid escalating regional tensions. Al-Zaidi visited Washington in mid-July, where the two sides announced the expansion of economic and security cooperation and signed a series of agreements in the fields of energy, investment and the banking sector, before heading to Tehran to hold talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that addressed strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordination on regional issues.
Baghdad affirms that its foreign policy is based on achieving a balance in its relations with the United States and Iran, while seeking to spare Iraq the repercussions of regional tensions. Meanwhile, observers believe that the recent diplomatic moves also aim to enhance internal stability and support the necessary environment for implementing the economic and reform programs announced by the government, in conjunction with the continuation of the anti-corruption campaign it launched since taking office.
