Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian oversaw the signing ceremony of an agreement and memoranda of understanding between the two countries in the fields of transportation, railways, training and management on Thursday in Tehran.
The signed memoranda and agreements included the following:
First: The International Land Freight and Carriage Agreement.
Second: Memorandum of Understanding to link the railways on the (Kermanshah – Khosravi – Khanaqin – Baghdad) line.
Third: A memorandum of understanding for twinning between the two capitals, Baghdad and Tehran.
Fourth: Memorandum of Understanding in the field of government administration, training and human resources development.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, earlier on Thursday morning for an official visit.
Before leaving Baghdad, Al-Zaidi said in a post on the “X” platform that during his visit he would meet with senior officials in the Islamic Republic of Iran to discuss issues of common interest, bilateral cooperation, and consultations on regional issues and efforts to consolidate security and stability in the region.
He added that Iraq and Iran are bound by historical and cultural ties, geographical borders, and common interests, which necessitates continuing to work in a spirit of dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect, in order to enhance sustainable development for the people of both countries and support regional and international security and stability.
Iraqi government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi confirmed on Wednesday during a press conference that al-Zaidi’s visit to Tehran would include discussions on a number of bilateral issues, particularly cooperation in the fields of energy and agriculture, as well as discussions on recent developments in the region.
This visit coincides with Al-Zidi’s conclusion of a five-day official visit to the United States, during which his high-level delegation focused on launching a comprehensive economic partnership to support the Iraqi economy and expand investment opportunities, as well as opening new outlets for crude oil exports and increasing production and refining capacities.
The Prime Minister is expected to conduct a regional tour in the coming days that includes Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Syria, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations, especially with regard to the energy file, in light of escalating security tensions and the continued disruption of supply chains in the Strait of Hormuz as a result of the mutual military strikes between Washington and Tehran.
