The Iranian Kurdish opposition group, the Kurdistan Workers Association, announced on Friday that nine of its Peshmerga fighters were killed as a result of a “violent and intense” Iranian missile attack that targeted its headquarters and tents in the vicinity of the “Zarkaizla” area in Sulaymaniyah Governorate.
In an official statement, the association mourned its nine victims, who are: Yassin Kianpour (from Shazand), Zakaria Faqih Hassan Agha (from Bukan), Sina Safari (from Shahabad), Ahmad Mahmoudi (from Baneh), Farhad Qamari (from Divandarreh), Reza Sadeghi (from Bukan), Kasra Rahman Nejad (from Bukan), Siavan Niki (also from Bukan), and Soroush Nasri (from Marivan).
The statement confirmed that over the past 39 days, the association’s headquarters in the Kurdistan Region have been subjected to more than 40 attacks in which Iranian forces used more than 100 missiles and drones.
This announcement comes after a wave of ballistic missile strikes launched by the Iranian armed forces on Friday morning, targeting the headquarters of the opposition group in Tehran in the “Zarkoyzleh” area within the administrative borders of Sulaymaniyah Governorate.
A private source told Shafaq News Agency that rescue teams faced extreme field difficulties in recovering the bodies of eight victims who died in the initial bombing sites, due to the ruggedness of the mountainous area and the fact that the targeted headquarters and tents were located inside rocky cavities and caves.
This missile attack coincided with a security development in Erbil, where the Counter-Terrorism Service in the Kurdistan Region announced in an official statement that the defenses of the international coalition forces intercepted and shot down eight booby-trapped drones in the city’s skies between 04:19 and 05:25 on Friday morning, without any human casualties being recorded.
The attack was thwarted by the air defense systems of the US-led international coalition, coinciding with escalating security tensions in the region following an exchange of violent military strikes between Washington and Tehran.
