The imam and preacher of Najaf, Sadr al-Din al-Qubanchi, warned today, Friday, against legal proposals and trends that would release those involved in corruption cases in exchange for recovering the looted funds, considering that this approach represents an encouragement to steal again.
Al-Qubbanji said during the Friday prayer sermon that “the (Dawn) campaign to uncover corruption files was received by the Iraqi people with great optimism and positivity, but the proposal to pardon the thieves in exchange for the return of the stolen money raises concerns.”
The Friday prayer leader of Najaf said that “this project represents an explicit encouragement to steal again,” calling on the Iraqi judiciary to “deal with these corrupt individuals with complete fairness and strictness.”
Al-Qabbani stressed the need for “the handling of corruption files to be completely free from internal dictates and pressures or those coming from neighboring countries,” emphasizing the importance of everyone submitting to the (Dawn) campaign project, while warning at the same time against attempts to “politicize” this campaign.
The statements of the Friday prayer leader of Najaf come in conjunction with a lengthy statement issued earlier today by the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council, in which it revealed a legal and constitutional “roadmap” being coordinated with the Prime Minister’s office, aimed at easing judicial procedures against those accused of administrative and financial corruption cases, provided they voluntarily return public funds, stressing that the same mechanism adopted in the “tax deposits” case (the theft of the century) will be followed with those accused in the “North Refineries Company” case.
